Five new porters at Sandford Station retirement village
A new team of porters is now in place at North Somerset’s newest retirement village, learning the many skills that will enable them to support the new community at Sandford Station.

When Rob Veneto applied to be a porter at Sandford Station, he was hoping for a complete change. A former financial services manager, Rob was looking to emerge from 30 years behind a desk into a more stimulating and stress-free environment.

We’re cooking up a new service
The 70-seater Pullman Restaurant has been designed to be the social centre for residents at the Sandford Station retirement village and getting it off the ground has been a central focus for Julie Joyner, Head of Catering and Housekeeping at both Sandford Station and The Russets.

Julie joined the Trust in April this year and in the run up to first residents moving in to the site, has been responsible for recruiting and supporting the catering and housekeeping teams across the site. She has also been busy equipping and preparing the main restaurant kitchens for opening where her new team expect to serve up more than 100 meals every day.

Refurbishment steams ahead on historic Somerset Strawberry Line
Sandford Station part of Somerset’s historic ‘Strawberry Line’ connecting Yatton and Shepton Mallet, is undergoing a major restoration, returning it to its former glory and securing a rare piece of railway heritage for local enthusiasts and visitors. The ticket office and platform which closed in 1963, will re-open this year as part of the St Monica Trust development, looking exactly as it would have in the 1950's, with traditional GWR paintwork in cream and chocolate brown colours.

Final plans in place for Sandford Station retirement village
Construction is set to start immediately on what will be the final phase of the new St Monica Trust Sandford Station retirement village in Sandford, following North Somerset Council’s approval of plans for 25 beds of care home accommodation on the site.

A single storey facility , which will cater for elderly residents in need of high quality nursing care can now be built as integral part of the development, which is due to open its doors to its first residents in early October.
