Village within a village - Sandford community life

Located within the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Sandford is a historic Somerset village, the site of an ancient crossing point across the rolling Mendip Hills. It's part of the Parish of Winscombe and Sandford, which has a population of about 4,500 people with all the elements that enhance rural community village life.

At the heart of the village, Sandford village hall is a major centre of local activity, recently renovated with the support of lottery funding. The hall is used regularly for private functions but is also a venue for meetings, clubs, activities and local events including a regular keep fit class and village socials such as the Sausage and Mash lunch. The Parish is home to more than 70 clubs and societies, including bell ringers, bowls, art, painting and scrabble groups and voluntary organisations like the Mendip Society, who organise a regular programme of walks, talks and visits in the local area. There's also a local Sandford branch of the Women's Institute. Mendip Spring Golf Club is less than two miles away.

The Church of All Saints established in 1881 and a Methodist Church dating back to 1890 both offer regular services. The village boasts two pubs. The Railway Inn, just a short walk from the new St Monica Trust development, with its traditional home cooked menu, serves lunch time and evening food. On sale in Sandford is plenty of Somerset's finest cider, produced by Thatchers in the village since 1904, and still a popular independent cider producer.

The Parish has a medical surgery, with several doctors, two dental surgeries, an optometrist and a pharmacy. In addition there are chiropodists, physiotherapists, osteopaths and several practitioners of alternative medicines in the area.

Situated in the heart of some of Somerset's most beautiful countryside, there are many local tracks and pathways for anyone interested in exploring the area on foot. The historic Strawberry Line, a footpath and cycle track, runs directly alongside the St Monica Trust development at Sandford Old Station.
